GreenVETers: An unprecedented environmental crisis is currently unfolding, both globally and locally.
An unprecedented environmental crisis is currently unfolding, both globally and locally. The EU is beginning to realize the importance of climate action and is taking steps to combat pressing environmental problems, primarily through establishing the Green Deal. To achieve its objectives, however, it is necessary to apply and perform the principles of Deliberative Democracy and Citizen Deliberation (CD) in public and private debates. Participation in democratic life, especially for climate action, is a key deficit of younger generations , who should view themselves as current citizens, rather than citizens of the future, and begin advocating for sustainable futures. Concurrently, there is an urgent need for strong media literacy, active citizenship, and awareness on how advocacy should be deployed in democratic societies. These are effectively realized through practicing deliberative democracy whose associated skills are rooted in argumentation (i.e. exchange of divergent ideas, constructive dialogue, engaging in citizens’ assemblies, developing serious arguments, developing capacities for reflection during a debate) - skills highly valued, with potential for adoption in other disciplines as well. These competencies should be developed within more traditionally technical and practical fields, including Agriculture and Engineering, which are directly related both to causes of environmental degradation – through producing high ecological footprints – as well as innovative and sustainable solutions for tackling them. sustainable food-aid of good quality, promote action in line with the SDGs, and promote action in line with the SDGs.
